Confucius traveled east and met two  children arguing with one another. He asked,"Children, what are you two arguing about?"孔子东游，见两小儿辩斗，问其故。
One child said,"I say the sun is nearer to us when it just rises and farther away from us at noon.”
一儿曰：“我以日始出时去人近，而日中时远也。”

The other said,"I say the sun is farther away from us when it just rises and nearer to us at noon."
一儿曰：“我以日初出远，而日中时近也。”
The first child said,"When the sun begins to come up, it is big like a carriage cover, and at noon it is like a dinner plate.Isn’t it true that a faraway object looks smaller and a close object looks bigger?"
一儿曰：“日初出大如车盖，及日中则如盘盂，此不为远者小而近者大乎？”

 

 

The other child said, "When the sun comes up, it feels very cool, and at noon it burns like hot soup. Isn't it true that it is hot at close distance, and cool at faraway distance?"一儿曰：“日初出沧沧凉凉，及其日中如探汤，此不为近者热而远者凉乎？”
Confucius could not judge who was right.孔子不能决也。
The two children laughed at him and said,"Whoever said that you were a wise man?"两小儿笑曰：“孰为汝多知乎？”
